Yay Herbs!

July 6th, 2008 Posted in Gardening, Home Stuff

It was rainy off and on this holiday weekend.  Most of my yard work was spent weeding my lawn.  I felt that if I was removing plants, I should go ahead and plant some.  Well, that’s an excuse to do one of my current favorite things … visit the local nursery right down my street!  Since I don’t have a garden space just yet, I’m just buying stuff that I can plant in ceramic pots for the time being.I went ahead and got some rosemary and sage.  Even though the variegated leave varieties look nicer, I decided to get the “common” kitchen varieties .  I figured I’d go with the traditional stuff even though my thyme is of the lemony variety.  Speaking of the thyme, it’s getting these teeny tiny little purple flowers on them which looks neat.

I guess a tip for anyone reading:  try brushing your hands through your herbs softly.  A hint of the oils that give them their flavor will get on your hands.  Smells refreshing.

I’m not necessarily planning on cooking with herbs just yet, but it smells so incredible when I get close to the plants.  I let the cat smell some clippings but after a brief sniff, she made her yuck face.  Awesome!

Still no word on when the landscaping company is going to be doing my retaining wall, patio, and garden area.  They’re really backed up because it’s their busiest time of year for work.  I’ll try to look on the good side and be glad that it’s giving me more time to plan.  I’ve been trying to figure out my garden workspace.  One of the things that I’ve had issues with was a manhole that provides access to a sump pump.  It’s very unsightly, but I finally figured out how to incorporate a compost bin and low lying table for containers to obscure it.

Until then, I need to get in touch with my local planning and codes department with the city on my intentions for my backyard.  I know I’m going to have to submit deck plans to get a permit for a stairway.  The stairway will go down from my deck to the patio space.  It will require some footers and I need to understand what a codes inspector will be looking for during the inspection.
